About Mr Himanshu Shekhar

Mr. Himanshu Shekhar is a fellowship-trained Consultant Spinal Neurosurgeon with extensive expertise in managing both degenerative spinal conditions and traumatic injuries. His journey began with rigorous neurosurgical training at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh, culminating in his earning the FRCS in Neurosurgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2018. Early in his career, he was honoured with the “Prize for Best Performance” by the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS) in 2016 for achieving the highest score on the Part 1 European Board Examination in Neurosurgery.

In 2018, Mr. Shekhar further refined his skills by completing a prestigious one-year fellowship in spinal surgery at Leeds General Infirmary. His commitment to excellence continued as he became a Fellow of the European Board of Neurological Surgery and joined the General Medical Council’s Specialist Register in Neurosurgery in 2020. He began his consultant career at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee in 2020, initially serving as a locum consultant neurosurgeon before transitioning to his current role as a Consultant Spine Surgeon in November 2021.

Mr. Shekhar adopts a multidisciplinary approach to patient care, combining conservative treatments, targeted injections, and advanced surgical interventions to create personalized treatment plans. He performs a wide range of surgical procedures — lumbar decompression, lumbar laminectomy, lumbar discectomy, and lumbar spine fusion, along with anterior cervical discectomy, cervical laminectomy, and cervical foraminotomy. Beyond surgery, he also specialises in minimally invasive procedures such as vertebroplasty, lumbar facet joint and nerve root injections, sacroiliac joint injections, lumbar medial branch blocks, and coccyx injections, all designed to alleviate pain and enhance functional recovery.

Beyond his clinical work, he is deeply passionate about education and mentorship. He actively teaches junior doctors, trainee surgeons, and postgraduate students, including those enrolled in the University of Dundee’s MCh(Orth) course. His dedication to nurturing future specialists was recognized when he was named "Trainer of the Year" for 2023 by the East of Scotland Trauma and Orthopaedics trainees.

Widely respected for his clear, compassionate communication, Mr. Shekhar ensures that patients fully understand their diagnoses and treatment options. Trusted reviews on platforms like Doctify consistently highlight his technical precision, thorough evaluations, and empathetic care, underscoring his commitment to enhancing patient outcomes. His pursuit of clinical excellence and innovative education drives him to continuously contribute to the advancement of spinal neurosurgery.

After having seen other specialists Mr Shekhar was the only consultant to accurately diagnose my back pain. He showed empathy and took time to listen to my ailments, efficiently organised any scans needed then explained very clearly the options available to me to relieve me of the pain. These could never be guaranteed but in my case the procedure was a success. The entire process was efficient and would highly recommend Mr Shekar for any spinal concerns.

Dr Shekhar is incredibly knowledgeable, professional and impressive at diagnosing the cause of my long-standing lower back pain. Prior to finding Dr Shekhar, I felt I was just left suffering on pain killers which were not helping enough. Dr Shekhar was clear in discussing a plan of action and next steps.

I attended a consultation with Mr Shekhar after suffering long term back pain, which ultimately led to major surgery. Mr Shekhar is a true professional, polite and friendly, and I felt safe in his care from the minute I first met him. He fully explained the surgical procedure and responded to emails almost instantly with any queries I had. The surgery he carried out has been very successful and I am delighted with the results. I would have no hesitation in recommending Mr Shekhar to others.
