About Mr Wissam Abou-Chedid

Mr Abou Chedid earned his medical degree from the University of Saint Joseph in Beirut before completing his urology specialist training at Henry Mondor University Hospital in Paris.

He further honed his skills through fellowships in minimally invasive and robotic surgery at Saint Augustin Clinic in Bordeaux and the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust in Guildford.

He was then appointed as a consultant urological surgeon at the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust in February 2022. His robust academic background, including multiple postgraduate diplomas in Andrology, Laparoscopic surgery, urodynamics and pelviperineology, a master's degree in biomedical sciences and a fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, provides a solid foundation for his work.

Mr Wissam Abou-Chedid has distinguished himself as a leader in the field, particularly in robotic-assisted surgery and minimally invasive procedures for prostate cancer and benign prostatic enlargement.

His exceptional track record is marked by his significant contribution to the volume of surgeries performed, with over 600 cases completed in the last three years alone, making him one of the highest-volume consultants for robotic prostate surgery in the UK during that period.

Beyond sheer volume, Mr Abou-Chedid's expertise extends to specialized techniques, notably in retzius sparing prostatectomy, where he is recognized as one of the highest-volume surgeons in Europe. This recognition underscores his proficiency in advanced surgical methods that prioritize patient outcomes and quality of life.

In addition to his clinical practice, Mr Abou-Chedid serves as a Robotic and Minimal Invasive Urological Surgery Trainer at IRCAD, a renowned international center for research and training in minimally invasive surgery. Here, he shares his extensive knowledge and skills with surgeons from around the world, emphasizing the importance of adopting the latest technologies and techniques to achieve optimal patient outcomes.

Mr Abou-Chedid's commitment to innovation is evident in his pioneering work, such as day case robotic prostatectomy and the concept of self-removal of catheters post-prostatectomy. These groundbreaking advancements not only demonstrate his dedication to pushing the frontiers of urological surgery but also highlight his focus on improving patient recovery and quality of life.

Mr Wissam Abou-Chedid is not only dedicated to advancing prostate cancer care but also continually seeks new and modern techniques for the treatment of benign enlargement of the prostate, aiming to improve the quality of life for men experiencing urinary symptoms.

Recognizing the importance of staying at the forefront of medical technology, he has championed the use of innovative treatments such as Rezum, Echolaser, Optilume, and Exime, among other cutting-edge technologies.

By integrating these advanced methods into his practice, Mr. Abou-Chedid ensures that his patients have access to the most effective and minimally invasive treatments available. His proactive approach to embracing new technologies underscores his commitment to delivering the highest standard of care and improving outcomes for men with urological conditions.

Outside of his professional pursuits, Mr. Abou-Chedid is deeply involved in community outreach programs aimed at raising awareness about prostate cancer screening and prevention. Through these initiatives, he seeks to empower individuals to take charge of their health and advocate for early detection and intervention. Mr. Abou-Chedid's commitment to these causes extends to his active involvement with charities such as Prostate Cancer UK and The Prostate Project. He serves as a Prostate Cancer UK National Clinical Champion, leveraging his expertise to support the organization's mission of providing vital services, raising awareness, and funding research.

Mr Abou-Chedid has been exceptional in his professionalism and his bedside manner. It's scary knowing you have cancer but throughout I have been made to feel as comfortable ,assured and also aware of all possibilities. I personally cannot thank you all enough for how I've been treated over the last few months.

I would rate my experience with Mr Abou-Chedid a perfect 10 As a very daunting surgery (my first ever at the age of 68), I was really worried. But after talking to Mr Abou-Chedid, my mind was put at ease and I felt like it was not a major surgery at all and I would breeze throught it. He was right. I was in and out of hospital in a day and took the Catheter out myself after one week at home so a visit back to the hospital wasn,t needed. My recovery exceeded all expectations. No problems with incontinence and now, 10 weeks on, I am back to playing golf and lifting light weights.

I recently underwent a prostatectomy and was very well looked after throughout. Every step of the procedure was explained clearly, which left me feeling informed and comfortable. I was very pleased with the outcome, especially with the minimal surgery and small incisions made. Mr Wissam Abou-Chedid was extremely polite and clear when outlining the process and surgery, which gave me great confidence.

In July 2025 I underwent an elective Retzius-sparing bilateral nerve preserving robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford. Whilst in the run-up to surgery (diagnosis, MRI scan, trans perineal biopsy and follow-up consultations) I saw several Consultants from the Urology team at the Stokes Centre, when it down to the procedure, Mr Abou-Chedid performed this. The literature provided by the NHS ahead of the surgery cautions about the possible side-effects of surgery - with continence and erectile function being my two primary areas of concern. Writing this now, some 8-weeks post op, I find myself in excellent order. The surgery was a complete success, with the Prostate cancer completely excised (I learnt this week). Happily, thanks to Mr Abou-Chedid's surgical excellence, I am experiencing no side-effects: am fully continent and having good erections. I am both grateful and feeling blessed that life has returned to normal with no complications. Having spoken to many other men about their experience of surgery following a Prostate Cancer diagnosis, my story is somewhat more positive than theirs. So, if you are finding yourself in the position of having to consider surgery, and are reading this, I wholeheartedly recommend you seek Mr Abou-Chedid's services, be it via the NHS or through private healthcare.

Following referal to Royal Surrey for a radical prostatectomy, I met Mr Wissam Abou-Chedid who provided a clear explanation of the procedure, the recovery pathway and possible outcomes. On the day, surgery went smoothly and Mr Abou-Chedid and his team showed great care and professionalism throughout. Post-op, both speed and quality of recovery has exceeded my expectations and follow up appointments with Mr Abou-Chedid and his team have answered all my questions and concerns.

My operation was two weeks ago for radical robotic prostatectomy and due to Mr Abou-Chedid precision my nerves were preserved. This resulted in no side effects, like incontinence or erection issues. I’m pleased to say I am nearly back to normal. Mr Abou-Chedid on a personal level was very attentive , put me at ease and explained and answered all questions thoroughly. Fantastic Surgeon.

I wish every Doctor/Surgeon were like Wissam Abou-Chedid, he made me feel that everything was going to be ok, and the confidence he had in helping me to overcome my problem made me feel that I was in safe hands. I have nothing but praise for him. It's not often that you meet someone as caring and professional as he is. I consider myself very lucky to have been in his care.

The professionalism was excellent from the moment of the initial consultation through to the post surgical care. The whole process that I was to go through was explained in a clear and concise manner that left me feeling reassured; with all my questions fully answered. The operation was untaken by a very competent and friendly team, who looked after me very well. My post operational recovery has been good with no pain or problems.

Having never had to have spent any time in hospital going in for an operation was a little daunting! However the team at Royal Surrey County Hospital were excellent. Andy the anaesthetist and Jane the theatre nurse made me feel relaxed before the anaesthetic was applied and when I came round in the recovery ward the nurses who looked after me (checking blood pressure etc) were all kind and personable. My surgery was very successful, thanks to the excellent surgical skills of Wissam, and I didn't require any painkillers and have had none of the side effects that are associated with a radical prostatectomy. Before being discharged, the day after surgery, I was visited by the specialist nurses Helen and Maria. They checked my incisions and removed the dressings and answered a few queries that I had. It is now 6 weeks since my operation and all is well. I had my first opportunity to thank Wissam yesterday during our phone appointment for the first class outcome he was able to achieve for me which far exceeded my expectations.

This year’s exclusive course in #roboticsurgery at IRCAD brought together 44 participants from 17 countries, all united in their commitment to advancing their robotic surgical skills. Through immersive hands-on sessions, attendees performed robotic prostatectomy, cystectomy, and partial nephrectomy on cadavers, gaining invaluable practical experience. The event fostered a dynamic environment of innovation and learning. Thought-provoking discussions covered cutting-edge developments in the field, while renowned experts delivered lectures exploring intricate surgical techniques. Live surgery video sessions offered practical tips and real-time insights, enriching the educational experience. I was delighted to contribute by speaking about #Retzius_sparing robotic #prostatectomy and sharing my own experience with this technique. With international representation from Brazil, France, Greece, Italy, Lebanon, Spain, the UK, and the USA, the IRCAD #urologyfamily, brought together by Thierry Piechaud, continues to lead the way not only in innovation and excellence in robotic surgery, but also in shaping the next generation through world-class teaching. It was a pleasure to attend the #AUA25 meeting in Las Vegas and reconnect with friends and colleagues from around the world to discuss innovations and advances in #roboticsurgery and the treatment of #prostatecancer and benign prostatic enlargement. I had the opportunity to present the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust data on two initiatives focused on improving patient experience and quality of life: - Self-removal of suprapubic catheters by patients following #clipless_Retzius_sparing robotic prostatectomy, promoting greater independence after surgery - The use of Penthrox for patients undergoing transperineal prostate biopsies, helping to significantly reduce discomfort during the procedure. I look forward to welcoming friends and colleagues to the UK for #ERUS25 and #EAU26, both of which will be held in London.

It was a pleasure to host my colleagues Michel Wirtz, Gian Luca Soscia, and Naoufel Miaadi from Luxembourg, Belgium, and France at the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust! We had some brilliant conversations around the latest in robotic prostatectomy, especially exciting developments like day-case surgery, patient-led catheter removal, and running high-efficiency theatre lists. I performed two #clipless_Retzius_sparing prostatectomies to showcase this technique, which continues to deliver excellent outcomes for our patients. I also demonstrated how we’re using #Arista to control bleeding effectively while preserving functional results. Big thanks to Cédric Louradour, Geoffrey Deffontaine, and Philippe Wartel from the BD team, and of course to our amazing #TeamAwesome, for pulling everything together and making it such a great day. Plenty of innovation ahead in #roboticsurgery for #prostatecancer. Always a pleasure to share, learn, and grow together!

#clipless_retzius_sparing #daycase #selfremoval #highintensity | Wissam Abou-Chedid | 10 comments

I had a great day at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust where I joined my good friend and talented surgeon Constantinos Adamou to proctor two #clipless_Retzius_sparing robotic prostatectomies. It was a proud moment to help bring this technique to the Midlands, a meaningful milestone as we continue to grow the use of clipless Retzius-sparing surgery across the UK. It’s a game-changer for so many patients, and seeing it take root in more centres is genuinely rewarding. Even more than the cases themselves, what stood out was the chance to connect with the wider team. We had some brilliant conversations about driving innovation in surgical care, from #daycase prostatectomy and #selfremoval of catheters to #highintensity theatre lists. There’s a real appetite for innovation geared toward enhancing patient experience and optimising use of resources. Huge thanks to the team Anup Krishnan, Omer Altan, Donald MacDonald and Kieran Jefferson for the warm welcome and for making the visit such a pleasure. | 10 comments on LinkedIn
